Aboard the USS MASON in the Red Sea, naval officers sit packed in a windowless room ready and waiting to attack missiles or drones fired by Houthis. A fleet of U.S. Navy ships are protecting commercial and military vessels along the Red Sea from the Iranian-backed group.
The Houthis forces in Yemen have launched more than 40 missile and drone attacks against ships using the vital Red Sea. This has disrupted trade and is causing more inflation. With the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, and the Houthis attacking ships in the Red Sea, tensions in that region are escalating.
The Navy war ships have defended against torpedoes, and surface skimming missiles, but now they have to face up against anti-ship ballistic missiles. This type of missile has a range of 310 miles, and can easily reach speeds of mach 8 which is 8 times the speed of sound (6138 mph). The Navy says it’s the first time in recent history that a nonstate group of people have attacked commercial shipping.
Over the past few days, the Houthis have struck an oil tanker, setting it ablaze; fortunately there were no casualties, and the fire was extinguished. They have also fired missiles at 2 ships in the Red Sea causing minor damage.
Over the weekend, the US, and U.K. struck 36 Houthis facilities, and suspected hide-outs in Yemen. In response, the Houthis defiantly vowed to keep all attacks in the Red Sea until Israel ends its military retaliation against Hamas. The Houthis continue to target U.S. and U.K. ships in the Red Sea, but the airstrikes have diminished their capabilities to attack effectively.
Iran is supporting the rebel group to attack the U.S. and U.K. ships because they are infuriated that the US is still in their land, and they only caused more problems. They see the US as pirates coming to their land, stealing their natural resources, and causing turmoil. Iran warns the U.S. to not attack a key ship providing intelligence for the Houthis. Iran also states that if foreign relations break down, it’s the US’s fault. The U.S. is currently keeping a close eye on the intelligence ship and tracking its every move. Data suggests that it’s been there since January of 2023.
There should be a ceasefire in Gaza so the Houthis will stop. Israel is flattening Gaza while hurting much too many innocent people in the process. Houthis leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi has also stated they support Palestine, and if there is no ceasefire in Gaza, they will escalate attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
